Gaya,The Holy City of Bihar 

Introduction 
Gaya is a holy city which is located in the Indian state of Bihar. The city is located on the banks of Phalgu River and also considered as the most important place for Buddhists pilgrimage in the world. Gaya is also known as Bodh Gaya because it is here that Lord Buddha attained enlightenment during intense meditation under a Bodhi tree. Three hills Mangala-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayoni surround it from three sides and make at a safe and beautiful site. It is one of the major religious places and is also considered as a sacred place for the Hindus for performing rituals like Pind Daan, which is performed to pacify the ancestors in the heaven. The city of Gaya is surrounded with greenery, age old buildings and narrow by lanes. Apart from this, there are many places to visit in Gaya include Vishnupad Temple, Akshayabat, Barabar Caves, Mahabodhi Temple, Surya Kund and Pret Shila Hill, which make it a point for the tourists to visit the place.

History
Gaya is an ancient place and has great heritage and history. The city of Gaya is basically famous in history due to the Gautam Buddha enlightenments. Bodh Gaya is the place that is about 11 km from Gaya where enlightenment was attained by Gautam Buddha. Due to this reason the places that are nearby Gaya like Nalanda, Rajgir, Patliputra and Vaishali became famous as the places for the knowledge for ancient world. During the rule of Mauryans who ruled the area from Patliputra called as modern Patna, all these centers of knowledge got developed and flourished at that time. These rulers expanded their area beyond boundaries of subcontinent of India. At that time Gaya comes under the Magadh Region.

Tourism
Gaya is an ancient and historical place of Bihar. People can see various places such as Mahabodhi Temple, Animesh Lochan Chaitya, Chankramana and many more attractions in the city. This place is a pilgrimage destination where people visit from all over the country to view Buddhism, its culture and tradition. Various monasteries and temples have been constructed here by international Buddhist communities. This city has tropical climate which allows the tourists to visit through the year.

Places To Visit 

Mahabodhi Temple
Mahabodhi Temple is one of the most famous temple which is located in Gaya. The temple was initially built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century B.C. that experienced the use of brick in construction. At present, the shrine is maintained and managed by Archaeological Survey of India.

Vishnupad Temple
Vishnupad Temple is a most beautiful temple situated in Gaya. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to beliefs and religious texts, it is believed that the footprints present inside the temple are of Lord Vishnu.

Bodhi Tree
Bodhi Tree is a must visit place which is located south of the Mahabodhi temple in Gaya city. It is believed to be the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Under the tree, there is a stone platform on which it is believed that Lord Buddha sat in meditation gazing in the east direction.

Gaya Pind Daan

Gaya Pind Daan is a ritual performed by Hindus to free the spirits of their deceased ones, thus liberating them from the bondage of the materialistic world. The rituals are performed on the bank of the Ganga River and prayers are offered for the peace of their souls.
