Kozhikode,The City of Spices 

Introduction 
Kozhikode is a famous city of India's southern state of Kerala. This stunning city is situated on the Malabar Coast and also popularly known as Calicut. It is famous all over as the land of immaculate beaches, fragrant spice gardens, scenic country sides and generous people. The most important region of Malabar in earlier times, Kozhikode was the capital of the powerful Zamorins and a major trade and commerce center as well. The city continues to be a center of flourishing domestic and international trade, being the marketing center for commodities like pepper coconut, coffee, rubber, lemon grass oil etc. Apart from this, the city's old name Calicut gives birth to the word Calico which is a hand woven cloth. During the reign of Zamorin kingdom, the city was the capital of the royal empire. Its generous hills, rippling streams, significant ancient sites, wildlife sanctuaries, charming villages and busy marketplace entice tourists year after year.

History 
Kozhikode has a long and illustrious history. It was a leading trading centre for spices on the West Coast of India during the medieval period. Ruled by the Zamorin dynasty, Calicut found a place in World History with the discovery of sea route to India in 1498 by the Portuguese navigator Vasco Da Gama. He landed at Kappad a coastal fishing village and history was changed with the political scanario of India ultimately ending with it's colonization by the British. It remained under the Madras Presidency till the formation of Kerala in 1956 after independence.

Places to visit 

Kozhikode Beach
Kozhikode Beach is one of the most beautiful beach which is located in Kozhikode. It is a perfect setting for tourists wanting to enjoy the sunrise or sunset. The beach also houses a lighthouse, Marine Water Aquarium and Lions Park.

Kappad Beach
Kappad Beach is another beautiful and cleanest beach in Kozhikode. The popularity of the this Beach is owing to the fact that it was the place where Vasco da Gama, the famous world explorer first set his foot.

Manachira Square
Manachira Square is a must visit place in Kozhikode. It is the palace tank of King Vikrama, one of the great rulers in the region. It is surrounded by temples, churches, mosques and several traditional houses. The whole square is encircled by a laterite-sculpted wall and the area is carpeted with green grass.

Tali Temple
Tali Temple is one of the most ancient temple in Kozhikode. The temple is a rare example of Kerala style of architecture and is built of laterite and wood. The sanctum contains the image of the momentous event of the Mahabharata battle.
