Kurnool,The Gateway to Rayalaseema 

Introduction 
Kurnool is a beautiful city which is located in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is the headquarters of the district and is situated on the southern banks of the Tungabhadra and Handri rivers. It is known as a great administrative hub of the area. This city is also considered as one of the gateways to major Hindu pilgrimage such as the Shrine of Srisailam. Peta Anjaneyaswami, Birla Mandir, Nagareswarasawami, Iswaraswami, Venugoplaswami are some of the famous temples in the city. It is the sixth most populous city of Andhra Pradesh. The name of the city has been derived from Kandenavolu. Kurnool is also known as Kandenapalli or the city of Kandena . Kandena is a Telugu word which means Grease for carriage wheels. Legends say that the city of Kurnool is also known as the city of Skanda or Kumaraswamy (the chief God of Wars). Apart from this, the car festival of Sri Ajaneyaswami is the major event of the region that is celebrated for eight days, during November- December, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

History
Kurnool is a city of historical importance. The name of the place as Kurnool was derived from Kandanavolu, which is a Telugu name found in the ancient inscriptions and in literature. In the year 1687, the last Mogul Emperor Aurungzeb conquered the Deccan and later on let the Nizams control the Andhra centre of Kurnool. After some time, the Nizams and the Nawabs declared independence and later on ruled their independent regions of Hyderabad and Kurnool. The first ruler of Kurnool was Nawab Alaf Khan Bahadur and after his tenure, his descendants ruled the area for over 200 years. In the early 18th century, the Nawabs along with the sultans fought against the British Empire

Places To Visit 

Belum Caves 
Belum Caves is a major tourist attraction in Kurnool. It is an underground cave and has three well like cavities. The main attraction of the cave is the exquisite stalactite and stalagmite formations. Natural waterfall is also seen in this cave which is very beautiful and attractive.

Yaganti Shiva Temple
Yaganti Shiva Temple is one of the most famous temple in the city of Kurnool. It was built in the 15th century by the Vijayanagar rulers. The temple has the Agastya Pushkarni, where water flows from the bottom of the hill, throughout the year. The place is renowned for caves like the Agastya Caves, Venkateswara Caves and Veera Brahmam Caves

Sai Baba Temple
Sai Baba Temple is also a most popular temple in Kurnool. The temple spreads over an area of 1.5 arces. The idol of Saibaba is made from marble stones. The temple also has idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Hanuman.

Srisailam Dam
Srisailam Dam is one of the prime attraction of Kurnool city. The dam is located on the bank of River Krishna and is seated in a deep valley. It includes 12 crest gates and an elevation of 300 m. The construction of the dam started in 1960 and was completed in 1981.

Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary
Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary is also a must visit place in Kurnool. It covers an area of around 614 sq. km. The sanctuary is home to jackals, Indian foxes, wolves, Indian cobras and the endangered great Indian bustards. Birds like sparrows, Indian rollers and mynas can be seen in the sanctuary.
