Introduction 
Meerut is a metropolitan city which is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a fast developing city of Uttar Pradesh after Noida and Ghaziabad. The city of Meerut is situated between the Holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna. It is an ancient city located 56 km north-east of New Delhi. It is a part of the National Capital Region of India. It is the 16th largest metropolitan area in India and the 17th largest city in India. Meerut is the largest supplier of sports goods and also the largest manufacturer of musical instruments in India. The city of Meerut is a trade centre for agricultural products and has a substantial amount of industry, including manufacturing, smelting, handicrafts, and the milling of sugar, cotton, flour, and oilseeds. It is also a major educational center for Northwest India. People from the entire country and from all over the world come here in order to continue their studies and earn their degrees.

History 
The city of Meerut may have derived its name from Maya Rashtra, the capital of the kingdom of Mayasura, Mandodari's father and Ravana's father-in-law. The other reflects that it got its name because the Marathas resided here for some time. It was under the Harappan kingdom in the Vedic age. This name may have mutated to Mairashtra, Mai-dant-ka-khera, Mairaath and eventually Meerut. The city is better known as the place where the Indian Mutiny was started on 10 May 1857. Meerut was a settlement in Asoka's time and contains various Hindu and Muslim buildings from the 11th century onwards. The tension between Muslims and Hindus periodically erupted into violent conflict.

Meerut is one of the most imperative towns in the Northern part of India. It is a significant tourism destination in Uttar Pradesh. The city boasts of some very important historical as well as cultural heritage sites. The city of Meerut has numerous major tourist attractions that include several churches and cathedrals such as St. John's Church, which is definitely worth visiting. Large number of travelers like to visit Vilveshwarnath Temple, which is said to be the oldest temple in this region. The major Meerut attractions of Meerut include Jain temples of Hastinapur, St. John's Church, Augarnath Temple, Jama Masjid , Martyr's Memorial, Shahpeer's Mausoleum, Shahi Eid Gaah, Dargah of Baley Miyan and many others.

Places to visit 

St. John's Chruch
St. John's Chruch is one of the oldest church in North India which was established by Chaplin Reverend Henry Fisher in 1819 in the Army cantonment area of Meerut. The church was dedicated to the local people by Bishop Wilson. The church witnessed the struggle between the Indian soldiers and the British forces during the Revolt of 1857.

Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid is one of the most famous mosque in Meerut. It was constructed by Hassan Mahdi who was the Wazir of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi in 1019. It is considered to be the first mosque in North India which was restored by the Mughal Emperor Humayun.

Suraj Kund Temple
Suraj Kund is one of the historical area in Meerut. The Suraj Kund pond was built by a businessman, Lawar Jawahar Lal in 1714. Suraj Kund is surrounded by many ancient temples, including the famous Baba Manohar Nath Temple built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

Kali Paltan Mandir
Kali Paltan Mandir is a most famous temple in Meerut. The temple was built in honour of the martyrs of the Revolt of 1857. It is believed that there is a self-manifested Shivalingam in the temple. The temple has great significance as the first war of Indian independence, the Revolt of 1857, started here.

Gandhi Bagh
Gandhi Bagh is also an another Tourist attarction in Meerut. It is a most beautiful garden which is situated on the mall road of Meerut. The garden is famous for the musical fountain show, organised every evening. The garden is also populary known as company garden.
